The hours were handed to you as a list. They belong on a clock.

You do the practice questions on the app. You get them right. Then the real test writes it differently and the answer falls apart.

Four and a half, nine, ten, fifty-six, ninety. All numbers, no picture. They swap places in your head because nobody showed you where each one lives.

You look up 'daily rest' and get a paragraph with three exceptions. Eleven hours, or nine, or three plus nine? The paragraph never says which one is yours.

4 h 30 driving, then 45 minutes: split only as 15 + 30.

That's the forty-five minute break. Four and a half hours of driving, then stop. Split it only as fifteen plus thirty. On the clock, not in a paragraph.

Put a number in its place on the clock and it stays put.

COMPARE

The same topic, studied two ways

INSTEAD OF THIS
  • Read a paragraph about tachograph modes and try to remember the four symbols.
  • Repeat app questions until you recognise the sentence, not the rule.
  • Mix up driving time and working time because they sit in the same list.
The digital tachograph fitted to vehicles within scope of the retained EU drivers' hours rules automatically records, via motion sensor and internal clock, driving time and distance travelled. The driver must manually select the correct activity mode — other work (crossed hammers), period of availability (square), or rest (bed) — whenever the vehicle is stationary, as the vehicle unit cannot distinguish non-driving activities. The driver card is inserted at the start of each duty period and a manual entry must cover all activities since last withdrawal. Printouts must be produced on request by an authorised examiner, and records kept for a minimum of twenty-eight days in the vehicle.
CHOOSE THIS
  • See the four symbols drawn on the tachograph display in the cab.
  • Understand why the rule exists, so the answer holds when the wording changes.
  • Driving time and working time side by side, each with its own clock.
Wheel, hammers, box, bed: driving, other work, availability, rest.

  2. Stopping distances on ice: up to ten times longer
  3. Fire on board: when the extinguisher helps and when you walk everyone off
  4. Fitness to drive: alcohol, tiredness and the lower limit in Scotland
VCase Studies and Final Revision · pp. 59-65
  1. Reading a Part 2 case study: how to find what each question is really asking
  2. Three worked drills: the long-distance run, the axle overload and the bus in bad weather
  3. The numbers that trip people up, side by side — your night-before checklist

One topic per page. One drawing per topic.

Each page has one rule, drawn from inside the cab. The reason comes first. The number comes second. You see it where it actually lives — on the dashboard, on the display, on the plate.

The orange plate decoded: hazard number on top, UN number below.

That's the orange plate on the back of a tanker. Hazard identification number on top, UN substance number below. One page, one drawing, one thing to know.

Read the reason, see the plate, and the number has somewhere to live.

Which driver is this book built for?

Going for Cat C or C+E

Going for Cat C or C+E

You drive a van or a 7.5-tonner and you need to pass the Cat C theory before you can book the practical. Already hold Cat C and going for C+E? There's no new theory test, but the book works as a full refresher on hours, loads and coupling.

Going for Cat D1 or D

Going for Cat D1 or D

You want to drive a minibus, bus or coach. The book covers both lorry and bus topics, and differences are flagged on the page.

Back to theory after years of driving

Back to theory after years of driving

You have been behind the wheel for decades but never sat a multiple-choice theory test. The format has changed and you want to understand it, not just memorise it.

Common questions

Is this a physical book?

No. It is a PDF you receive by email. You can read it on your phone, tablet or computer, and print it if you want a paper copy for the cab.

Can I read it on my phone?

Yes. Every page is designed for a phone screen. Open it on a break or at home the night before the test.

Does it work if I am starting from scratch?

It works both ways. Each topic starts with the reason, so you don't need previous theory knowledge. If you've been driving for years, you'll recognise every scene — the book just puts the numbers and rules you've never had to sit a test on in the right order, on the clock and on the display.

How do I receive the book and the bonus books?

By email, in PDF. You get the book and the two bonus books at the email address you enter at checkout.

Is this the official DVSA material?

No. Independent study guide. Not affiliated with, authorised or endorsed by DVSA or any government body. All practice questions are written from scratch for this book. Does not replace formal training.

Does it cover lorry (Cat C) and bus (Cat D)?

Yes. The book covers the theory topics for categories C1, C, C+E, D1 and D. Where a rule differs, it is flagged on the page.

Does it cover Scotland and Wales?

Yes. Drivers' hours, the tachograph and the theory tests are the same across England, Scotland and Wales. Where a rule differs — for example the lower drink-drive limit in Scotland — it is flagged on the same page. Northern Ireland is not covered.

I already have the app. Why do I need this?

The app tests whether you recognise a sentence, and the official book gives you the full text. This book sits between them: one topic per page, drawn from the cab, with the reason first. So when the question is worded differently, you can still work out the answer. Use it alongside the app and the official material, not instead of them.

Is this a one-off payment?

Yes. You pay once and the PDF is yours to keep. No subscription, no renewal.

Does this replace driver training?

No. This is study material for the theory tests. It does not give you a certificate, a Driver CPC qualification card or periodic training hours. You still sit the official DVSA tests, and it does not replace professional training, an approved training provider or supervised on-road practice.

Before you close this page

The theory test does not have to be a memory contest.

When every rule has a reason and every number has a place on the clock, the answer comes to you — even when the question is worded differently.

Open the book, see the page, understand the rule.

You already know how to drive. Now see the theory the way it should have been taught.
